To fans of sassy and savvy urban music, the name Rick James will forever be associated with the mainstream emergence of funk—that bottom-heavy blend of rock and soul that sparked a multi-racial musical revolution in the 1970s and 1980s and has since influenced everything from rap to raves, punk to progressive rock. Along with the fame, the Grammy Award, and superstardom came drug abuse and even felony convictions, all of which are chronicled in this gripping, posthumous tell-all of the funk revolution.
About the Author
Rick James first signed with Motown Records with a band called the Mynah Birds where he played alongside Neil Young. Years later, he signed with Motown as a solo artist and released his debut album, Come Get It!, in 1978. As a producer and writer, he lent his talents to established acts like the Temptations, up-and-comers like Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls, and amateurs like comedian Eddie Murphy. He died in 2004.

Rick James is One of the Last true soul brothers in Entertainment. I mean Rick was always on the Real. this Book is the Kind of Book that I was wanting out of Chaka Khan's and Aretha franklin's Books which just never brought it. Rick James Brings it and keeps it Real. I always Admired Rick for always Being a Strong Minded Black Soul Brother no matter what the situation and no matter his surroundings. this Book tells his story from Buffalo New York(which is also my birthplace)B-Lo ain't never changed.
from the Projects and everywhere else in between. Rick's enlistment in the Service to his AWol to Canada and his eventual meeting up with Neil Young and the later finding a Band together called Mynah Birds which was named after a big time department store in canada. all of the other struggling Musicians that rick encountered there.
Props to Rick's Mother Betty who always challenged Rick and believed in His Talents. always channeling that Creativity. Rick's brothers and Sisters were very instrumental as well.
going out to Detriot and California were something else.
dealing with the Politics of Motown Records and then later Warner Brothers all interesting reads.
Rick James paved the way for Prince who ain't never fully acknowledged Rick's Pressence on his Creativity. Prince might now have cross-over and a Song on a Verizion Wirless cellPhone Commerical, but without Rick James then Prince might have ended up working on the Phone Lines for Verizion. Rick was very instrumental in taking funk Music to other territorys without Losing the Groove. Rick was instrumental to Michael Jackson,Lionel Richie and other R&B Acts mixing up Dance Music with Slow Jams and also attracting a Pop Audeince as well.
All the Rappers owe a Huge Debt to Rick James. I mean Rick is the Most sampled and Looped Artist over the past Decade easily. Rick had more talent in his Pinky than most of them as well.
I applaud R.kelly,DJ Quik,Ice Cube,ODB,RZA,and other acts that have acknowledged the Greatness of Rick's Music and how much it touched so many lives.
Teena Marie: still the truth. Rick james showed her structure, instrumentation and Production and she ran with it. Teena Marie is a Honorary Soul Sister. she ain't no Pinocchio flavor of the month like Robin Thicke,Justin Timberlake,Joss Stone and Other Ice Acts that are faking the Soul.
Mary Jane Girls: One of the Greatest Female Groups Ever period. MJG is Timeless.
Stone City band: Some of the Baddest Musicians Ever and they haven't gotten there full due,
Lisa Sarna,Tom Flye,Process and the Doo Rags, Eddie Murphy,White Cane,Mynah Birds,Hot Lips and all the Musicians and Folks He Worked with through the Years and Engineers as well.
Rick James's Musical Genius Responsible for so much of Music you hear today and shall here in many years to come. His work is timeless.
This Book touches on his Pain,Humor, feelings about Race,Sex,Class and everything else in between. how many other Artists would bare there Soul as Rick James does here? there was only Rick James and we were greatful to have Him. I Miss the Brother and hoep to get hopefull more unreleased Works from his Vault. Rick James was a deep brother who expanded on so much. He was One of a Kind type cat. RIP and thank you for the Funk and Realness. Black,Proud,Strong-Minded and Opinionated which we are missing so much these days.
