Ten Years After: Anthology 1967-1971 Seven years, ten albums, 28 American tours and countless jaunts around the UK and Europe: the statistics only begin to tell the story of Ten Years After. In that time, too, they scored two major hit singles, headlined most major festivals, and kept the blues burning with a fiery intensity that still has not been extinguished. Almost thirty years worth of hard rocking blues bands have sprung up since Ten Years After called it a day, but not one has even threatened to eclipse all that the quartet achieved in its lifetime. For many people, their first exposure to Ten Years After came via the Woodstock Festival, in 1969. Comparative unknowns in the company of some of rock’s most heavyweight names, the unassuming blues band from the wrong side of the ocean literally tore the formbook to shreds. Other bands played longer sets, others provided more visual thrills. But, as the crowds let out from Yasgur’s farm, to tell the rest of the world what it missed, the first three words on many of their tongues had been graven into place all weekend. Ten. Years. After. The release of the accompanying movie and album, dominated by a truly incendiary version of the show-stopping “I’m Going Home,” only confirmed what word-of-mouth had already established. Woodstock had many stars. But Ten Years After was its first supernova.
