DUSTY SPRINGFIELD Ultimate Collection Since Dusty Springfield’s untimely death from breast cancer on March 2, 1999, at age 59, her title as England’s “queen of blue-eyed soul” has grown to icon status. As her contemporary British songtress Petula Clark reflected at Dusty’s passing, “The way she looked was easy to impersonate—the panda eyes and the bouffant hair. But the voice was impossible to imitate…Dusty was the perfect pop singer.” Born Mary Isabel Catherine O’Brien on April 16, 1939, the smoky-voiced singer became interested in music at a young age, counting the sultry and intimate stylings of Peggy Lee as an early influence. In 1958, while still in her teens, Dusty joined the Lana Sisters, an all-girl vocal trio reminiscent of the old-fashioned harmony blend of the McGuire Sisters and the Chordettes. The following year, Dusty formed the folk-pop trio The Springfields with her brother Tom (real name: Dion O’Brien) and friend Tim Field (later replaced by Mike Hurst). They became the most popular vocal group in pre-Beatles Britain, scoring hits with Island Of Dreams and Say I Won’t Be There, both written by Tom. In 1962, The Springfields enjoyed a U.S. success with Silver Threads & Golden Needles, but broke up the following year, giving Dusty the opportunity to embark on a solo career.
