GregoryIsaacs:Ultimate Collection
Gregory Isaacs is one of the best-known reggae singers in the world, having long ago joined the pantheon of renowned Jamaican vocalists. Like his predecessors Alton Ellis and John Holt, Isaacs is most famous as a crooner of love songs exposing the vulnerable heart of a passionate man, but like Bob Marley, and Isaacs’ contemporary Dennis Brown, Gregory has also been an astute creator of potent social commentaries. The international acclaim lauded on his work is highly justified, as Isaacs’ readily identifiable vocal tones and sharp songwriting skills have been responsible for many outstanding works in both forms.
Gregory reached his peak of popularity in the late 1970s and early ’80s, when contracts with major record labels made his work readily available to audiences around the world, but Isaacs had substantial hits in Jamaica long before then, and would continue to rule the charts long after. In truth, his three-and-a-half-decade professional career has been something of a roller-coaster ride, taking in plenty of soaring heights and a few plummeting depths along the way.
