JUDY GARLAND - THE SHOW THAT GOT AWAY

JUDY GARLAND - THE SHOW THAT GOT AWAY Garland, Judy: The Show That Got Away From June 24, 1963, to March 26, 1964, Judy Garland devoted her considerable energies and talents exclusively to video tapings for the world of television. This entertainment legend went into the weekly series fold with promises of wealth beyond belief: a deal with CBS worth a total of $24 million if the series ran four years, and an estimate of another $4 million from syndication sales. Unfortunately, she left her single season with only the 26(plus) hours worth of videotapes to show for all her effort. It’s ironic that her “failed” television series of that single season is now responsible for preserving her reputation as one of the finest performers of all time. These hours represent the only audio/video records that remain of Garland at a physical and vocal peak as a live performer during the 1951-1969 concert years portion of her nearly 45-year-long career. Magic was frequently made on-camera by the series’ star and her guests. Mismanagement was the name of the game behind the scenes, however, almost from day one. The network executives were seemingly intent on sabotaging the very show they had fought to win the rights to, which was its most expensive and high-profile venture of the 1963-64 season. CBS didn’t waste any time in exercising creative input when they humiliated Garland by insisting she needed a “second banana” to help carry her show. Jerry Van Dyke, brother of the network’s star Dick, was cast. Fortunately, producer George Schlatter’s famed touch (best remembered for his “Laugh-In” series) could still be felt when TJGS videotaped its first show on June 24, 1963, before a star-studded crowd.
