LIZA MINNELLI - ULTIMATE COLLECTION
Minnelli, Liza:
Ultimate Collection
This disc, which spans nearly the whole of Liza Minnelli's recording career—from her very first solo album in 1964 at age 18, to one of her most unique recordings from a whopping 25 years later. You will hear not only some of her greatest hits from over a quarter of a century timeframe, but also many selections that will amaze you with a versatility that you might not have associated with a star best known for belting it out while dripping in Halston sequins. You just may be surprised to hear her try rock, pop and country-tinged songs on this disc…even a dance club number! Throughout a long career that is now in its fifth decade, Minnelli has continually tried material (and styles) new to her and to her audiences. Let's take a look at the chances she's taken, as we go through the years and the songs that span the length of this new compilation.
Liza May Minnelli was born on March 12th, 1946, and first entered the family business at the age of 2˝ when she appeared (unbilled) in the final scene of her mother's MGM movie In The Good Old Summertime. At ten, she made her stage debut during Judy Garland's return engagement at the famed Palace Theater during the 1956-57 NYC theater season, dancing to her mother's "Swanee," a routine she and Judy would repeat over the years. By 1960, Liza was seriously considering making show business her profession (abandoning the idea of being an ice skater), a decision sealed by her 1961 high school success when she played the lead role in The Diary Of Anne Frank. A year later she sought her parent’s permission to move out on her own to NYC, and within only a few months (in April 1963, just after her 17th birthday), she made her critically acclaimed and award-winning (Daniel Blum’s Theatre World) off-Broadway debut in the revival of Best Foot Forward. A hit single of her main solo from "Forward" led to a recording contract with Capitol Records.
