Bad For Good: Very Best Of
Not many bands last a decade, much less three, but the Scorpions are still rocking hard 30 years after the release of their debut album, Lonesome Crow, building on a legacy of indelible music with new recordings and touring the world to support them. With over 22 million albums sold worldwide, a global fan base, and unforgettable songs that continue to top international playlists, the Scorpions remain Germany's most popular musical export—ever.
But it was a long way from the town of Hannover to the top of the charts and the arena stages of the world. As a teenager growing up in the '60s, guitarist Rudolf Schenker was strongly influenced by British superstars like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, and American rockers Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Bill Haley. He decided to put his own band together in 1965. Singer Klaus Meine, inspired by most of the same artists and of like musical mind, had started his own band, the Mushrooms. “We played in the same clubs,” recalls Meine, who found a kindred spirit in Schenker. “I knew he was serious, on the same track. We shared the same dream.”
By 1970, Schenker, Meine and guitarist Michael Schenker, Rudolf’s younger brother, were on their way to making their dream a reality, despite having had an inauspicious beginning: they were disqualified from a local band contest for playing too loud. “From the beginning, before we ever went into a studio, we tried to play everywhere, as many gigs as we could play,” says Meine. But although they emphasized the live aspect, they were equally aware of the importance of writing good original material—in English. “There was no way around it. That was the ticket to a world career,” says Meine, who realized that singing in his native tongue would limit the band’s future. “Writing lyrics in English meant we could break out of Germany.”
