Al Gore’s decision to use “Let the Day Begin” as reveille for his presidential campaign came as a surprise to Michael Been, the brilliant singer/songwriter whose band, the Call, recorded it in 1989. “I watched a lot of the Democratic Convention, off and on, while I was working in the studio,” Been explains. “But I missed the end of Gore’s speech, and I missed the song. I only found out when I got home, and there were lots of messages on my answering machine from people who had heard it.”
A uniquely American band, the Call charged from the gate in the early ’80s, attempting to fuse the new, post-punk political awareness and social idealism in music with the crackling guitars and minimalist song structure of New Wave. Like his contemporaries in such bands as U2 and the Alarm, Been’s blood ran hot because of the injustices he saw in the world around him, and his lyrics seethed with rage at indifferent governments, hypocritical religions, the spiritually bankrupt and the morally unsound.
