EVELYN TURRENTINE-AGEE

The highly acclaimed, award-winning Evelyn Turrentine-Agee and the Warriors are a class act that God put together for his glory and praise. In this interview with THE GOSPEL TRUTH, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee tells us exactly how God Did It! Evelyn Turrentine-Agee grew up alongside her seventeen siblings in a family that was rich in talent and love. The Tyler family didn’t have much money, but they “never lacked anything.” When we asked Evelyn about her early childhood, Evelyn said, “We were poor, but didn’t know it.” Evelyn said she grew up in a typical family and that her father “worked two jobs” while her mother stayed home to look after the children. “With 18 children to look after, my mother was a woman who knew how to take care of things.”

Evelyn said she grew up as a “daddy’s girl,” so she would accompany her father nearly every place he went. Fortunately for us, one of the places that Evelyn chose to accompany her father to was the stage. “My father was the founder and the lead singer of a local Gospel quartet in St. Louis, Missouri called, “The Gospel Melody Men.” “I started [singing] on stage with him when I was three.” While she was performing on stage with her father she said she developed a strong love and appreciation for Gospel music. The responses that came after Evelyn’s performances were so good that people soon made regular requests for her.

Evelyn and her family got their first real break after her father befriended a man by the name of Artie Shippings. When Mr. Shippings discovered how talented her father was, he started his own record label and signed her father to it. Because of Evelyn’s interest and talent in performing Gospel music, her father also formed and managed a young female quartet group for her on the same label. Evelyn’s first quartet group was an all-female, teenage quartet called “The Tylerettes.” Evelyn was only 13 years old at that time. But managing five teenage girls proved to be too much for Evelyn’s father, so he replaced the other four girls in the group with four of Evelyn’s male cousins.

Afterwards, Evelyn’s father changed the name of her group from “The Tylerettes” to “The Tyler Singers.” The very first song that “The Tyler Singers” recorded onto was an old Gospel song favorite called “Precious Lord.” However, just as things were looking up, “The Tyler Singers” broke up. The split occurred after Evelyn married Curtis Turrentine in 1962. Curtis Turrentine was an electrical engineer. So shortly, after they were married, Curtis relocated his new bride to Detroit, MI to be near his family and he had heard jobs were more plentiful in Detroit. In Detroit, Evelyn and Curtis lived with Curtis’ parents.

Although the move may have signaled the end of Evelyn’s recording career in St. Louis, something far better was just beyond the horizons. The first Sunday that Evelyn was in Detroit, she said they went to her husband’s family’s church. Her mother-in-law had been quite vocal about Evelyn’s singing abilities and she encouraged her pastor to invite Evelyn to sing in his live broadcast for the Sunday evening service. The church’s pastor turned out to be a “well-known singer in Detroit, and through him, Evelyn was “re-introduced into Gospel Music.” Once people were exposed to Evelyn’s singing over the airways, she said the telephone calls poured in, and she was invited to sing at different events.

Once Evelyn started touring again, the strain on her marriage was too great so her and her husband divorced. To help support her music ministry, Evelyn worked for a local law firm as a legal administrator for approximately 17 years. She was so “determined to sing Gospel music,” that she said she joined different local Gospel music groups in an attempt to find her niche. “Eventually, she teamed up with “The Gospel Echoettes.” Her first record deal with them was on the BilEsse label, which was owned and operated by Bill and Essie Moss. After “The Gospel Echoettes” did their first recording on the BilEsse label, the group’s manager was tragically killed.

This sad incident sent a somber note throughout the group, and after a while, they split up. Around the time “The Gospel Echoettes” had disbanded, Evelyn had made many friends in the Detroit area. Along the way, Evelyn remarried. One of Evelyn’s closest friends happened to be a member of the Gospel group, “The Gospel Warriors.” So Evelyn ended up singing with them, and they opened a community fellowship center called, “The Love Center.” Shortly after “The Love Center” was formed, Evelyn and the group created a choir and filled it with their children and many of the disadvantaged children in their neighborhoods. The name of their new choir was called “The War on Sin Choir.” The group’s first recording with “The War on Sin Choir” was with Light Records.

The recording, “War on Sin,” turned out to be a huge success, and it won a Stellar Award. However, with the Stellar Award came numerous challenges, demands, and problems. Eventually, the business of creating good Gospel music started to wear on Evelyn. “The Love Center” closed and Evelyn stepped away from the Gospel music scene. That was a tough time in her life. It was the first time she had ever “taken a break” from recording and performing Gospel music.

Evelyn would take a 10-year hiatus from the Gospel music scene but the Holy Spirit told her “to stop feeling sorry about her career and to get up and work.” So in 1999, after receiving orders from on high to continue waging her war on sin, Evelyn for W.O.S. (War On Sin) Records and recorded her first project entitled, God Did It. With a finished product in her hands, Evelyn began to search for a way to get her musical message to the world. She ran into a young friend from Brooklyn, NY who was gaining huge success on his first nationally released debut project and he advised her that she should contact the owner of his record label to see how he could help her through his unique marketing tools and strategies.

The young man was, Keith “Wonderboy”Johnson, the record label was World Wide Gospel, the CEO and founder was Kerry Douglas, the marketing strategies was The Gospel Truth magazine and IGMN - The Independent Gospel Music Network and the rest was, well, God Did It. Evelyn contacted Kerry Douglas and (now get this) purchased advertisement in the Gospel Truth magazine along with enlisting other services that included manufacturing, radio & retail promotions and tracking. When God Did It reached radio stations and retailers everywhere via The Gospel Truth and the free CD sampler included in every issue, the response was huge; larger than all had anticipated.

Kerry contacted Evelyn and told her it was time to let this project minister to all. Evelyn and Kerry reached an agreement for IGMN to continue manufacture, promote and distribute God Did It. Once again, God Did It. The sales of God Did It have been phenomenal along with earning Evelyn countless awards, nominations and recognitions and opened the doors for her to minister all across the country. But the most tangible success of God Did It is how this project has brought so many to give thanks and praise for all that God has done in their lives.

The singles, “God Did It”, “Til We Meet”, “Learn How to Wait” and “Come by Here” reminds us that although we are going through hard times, we can thank God for what he has done and what he will do in our lives, we can have patience and know that God has a plan that he is working out for our good and that we all have the power to evoke the presence of the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Evelyn and The Warriors have already completed their second project that features live and studio produced tracks. The project is still in the final production stages and is scheduled for release before the end of the first quarter 2002. Producers for Evelyn Turrentine-Live include Greg O’Quin, Rev. Gerald Thompson and some surprise producers. Evelyn is looking forward to a great year after all, God Did It before and God Will Do It again!
